Read ‘Em Before You See ‘Em

Compiled by Jeanne

Hollywood has raided the bookshelves again! There are several books being turned into movies and TV shows on the horizon, coming soon to a TV set or movie theatre near you.

The Alienist is a television series set to begin on TNT January 22.  Based on the book of the same title by Caleb Carr, the story is set in New York in 1896 where a number of prostitutes are being murdered. Police Commissioner Teddy Roosevelt calls on Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a man who is studying the human mind, to try to find the perpetrator.  The cast includes Luke Evans, Dakota Fanning, and Daniel Bruhl.

12 Strong is based on the true story of a U.S. Special Forces unit sent into Afghanistan to take on the Taliban after 9/11.  Chris Hemsworth stars as Capt. Mitch Nelson in this adaptation of the non-fiction book Horse Soldiers by Doug Stanton.  The film should be in theatres January 19.

A Wrinkle in Time is the long-awaited movie version of the beloved Madeleine L’Engle fantasy novel. It’s an epic fight between the dark and the light as three children travel time and space to find Meg’s scientist father.  Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine and Zach Galifianakis star. The movie opens March 9.

Red Sparrow by Jason Matthews is a spy thriller about a Russian ballerina who is recruited to spy for her country, bringing her into conflict with an American CIA agent.  Jennifer Lawrence stars in the movie of the same name, due out March 2.

Steve Spielberg is adapting Ernest Cline’s novel Ready Player One for the big screen.  Video gamer Wade Owen Watts is competing to unlock the secrets of an elaborate treasure hunt devised by an eccentric billionaire, but he’s up against people and corporations who will do anything to win.  Ready Player One is scheduled to open March 30.

All of the above books are available through the Bristol Public Library and the Avoca Branch Library, and most are available through R.E.A.D.S. as well.

Happy reading—and watching!
